Empower Afghan Women Through Sport

Donation protected
This is a fundraiser for the GOAL initiative, which stands for Girls of Afghanistan Lead. This initiative was founded by Friba Rezayee, the first woman to compete in the Olympic games in the history of Afghanistan. Friba proudly represented Afghanistan in Judo at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.

Afghanistan is known as one of the worst places to be a woman. However, there is hope for us. Despite the patriarchy, misogyny, and lack of resources, Afghan women have managed to fight for their rights, and have triumphed in their lives too. The GOAL Judo initiative is a grass root organization that will plant the seeds of success and empowerment for the women.

Recently, the security situation has worsening , but the youth and women are determined to go on with their lives. There have been several attacks lately at the Kabul University and Kaswar Danish Tutoring center. The suicide bombing and car bombs have also increased. Donald Trump has threatened to remove the entire American military presence in Afghanistan and leave the country back to the hands of the Taliban. The current peace talks between the Taliban, Afghan government and the US don't seem to be promising in protecting Afghan women's rights. It is up to the civil rights movement to assure that we won't go back to the dark regime of the Taliban.

The purpose of GOAL Judo program is to help underprivileged Afghan women to gain leadership in sports coaching roles, and become instructors to open their own sports clubs or to become professional athletes.  For further details,  please look at our website: https://womenleaders.ca/index.php/g-o-a-l/.

The purpose of this particular fundraiser is to raise funds for the Afghan girls transportation costs. Many families can't afford to send their girls to these training centers in Afghanistan, and even if they did, the funding will be always prioritized for the boys. This fundraiser will help keep these girls in the Dojos. The funds raised will be used to give a stipend to each girl on a weekly basis so they attend training regularly.  Your generous donations will also help to cover the most basic operating expenses of the Judo dojo in Kabul.

None of these girls are supported by their families, in fact, they’re often prevented from coming to the dojo by their brothers and other male relatives. Our principal mission is to empower these young women for their own education and independence. Same concept as  “help the girls stay at school”. Throughout my life, I learned that the only way to fight patriarchy is to empower women.

Martial arts training and the judo Dojo is just more than an athletic center.  Is a safe space for these girls. This is a place where they get to be themselves, gain confidence, become empowered and dare to dream to be free and independent.

The GOAL initiative and Women Leaders of Tomorrow welcome collaboration with international feminist organizations and womens' rights groups. Please share this fund raiser and our website with any of your friends who might be interested in this topic. The challenges facing women in Afghanistan are numerous and serious, but we are determined to work together towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
