Emory MSA Fundraiser for Student Programming:  Help Us Keep MSA At Emory!

This fundraiser is critical in order to make sure Emory University still has its Muslim Student Association, an important organization for the involvement and practice of our Muslim students here on campus and in our surrounding community.

Who We Are

Emory's Muslim Student Association is fundraising in order to provide the funds needed to keep our planned events active. The purpose of our organization is to provide Muslim students at Emory a platform and outlet to practice and celebrate their religion along with creating and allowing the interaction of a Muslim community on campus.

As Emory is composed of students from all around the world, MSA works to connect Muslim students and provide them with a network of religious opportunities and support along with resources and services to practice their faith. These include our efforts to work with the University to provide multiple prayer rooms on campus, wudu' rooms, congregational Jumm'ah prayer, Hot Halal food after prayer, mentorship programs and much more. Some of our members are also working on acquiring a "Muslim Space" that provides a communal area where students can spend time together, socialize, and have an overall safe space to express their faith.

We provide many events throughout the year that bring together the Muslim community on campus while also involving and bringing together non-muslims in our community events. Our attempts at inclusivity and inter-religious involvement have allowed many non-muslims to feel welcome at our events along with providing them the opportunity to learn about Islam and who we are as Muslim students.

We plan many events that range from halaqas to community service events,  fundraisers for global issues/causes to large dinners where we bring in expert keynote speakers from all around the world.

Why We Are Fundraising

Emory's SGS has recently started to cut funding for student organizations, and revoke specific funding for past and future events, and this has immensely impacted MSA's ability to carry on all the events that we have diligently planned for our students. They have also informed us of a debt on our funding from the previous year that we were not informed of until very recently which has given us very little time to settle the issue. We believe that there was an accounting error and some form of misunderstanding and miscommunication. We are currently trying to combat this issue as we are working with the Student Government to figure out how this issue arose, why we were not informed about it sooner, and how we can prevent this problem in the future. Until we settle this problem, we are in dire need of funding to continue our planned events.

We currently don't have the funding to put any of our plans in action, and we worry that this will take away from a critical part of Muslim students' experiences at Emory or in any university setting. This also prevents us from having many of our large fundraising events that we hold in order to raise money for many global causes such as for many refugee crises (ex. Refugees through SAMS and Rohingya Refugees) along with fundraisers to provide for many Muslim and non-Muslim communities in need around the world and in our Atlanta community.

We want to continue providing these important opportunities for our students not only this year but for years to come so that all of our students can have the same meaningful and important experiences and opportunities that we ourselves as current Muslim students at Emory have had along with our alumni.  We want to make sure that our current and future students have an MSA to be a part of.

We ask for any small donations that can provide the means to make at least some of these traditions and important resources that we provide carry through. This is also critical to keep MSA an active and existing organization at Emory University and to maintain our charter so that we can continue providing our services for years to follow and keep the presence of the Muslim community at Emory strong.  We would hate to see our university lose the presence and involvement of its Muslim Student Association which is a vital organization for our Muslim students and an important part of keeping our faith present on campus.

We never ask for any donations, but in order for us to continue to provide our events and services that are open to all and that usually provide free food, entertainment, gifts, and much more, we need to fundraise this amount to continue programming, hence the importance of this fundraiser.

Our Events

Some of our biggest events include our annual MSA Eid Dinner and MSA Art Gala are open events that bring together Muslims not just from Emory University but also from Universities around the state along with non-muslims from the campus. We have semesterly other dinners in which we bring in a panel of speakers from the community to discuss certain topics relating to Islam and the world/community that surrounds us. We hold educational events to raise awareness about Islam among students along with fundraisers to donate all proceeds to many different organizations and causes.

These are a few of the many events we hold each year that serve as a way to empower, enlighten, strengthen, and express our Muslim community and identity here on campus:
