Emmett Strong

On January 24th, 2016 Katie and Steve welcomed their first child, Emmett Jacoby Scheitler, into the world.
Shortly after Emmett's arrival he started having seizures. Over the next few months these episodes or seizures started to happen more frequently and the doctors diagnosed him with both epilepsy and infantile spasms which is extremely rare and can lead to developmental issues moving forward.
At this point Emmett has had multiple overnight EEG's, met with countless doctors, and has been on numerous types of medication that have all been mostly ineffective.

On September 20th Emmett underwent his first of two brain surgeries. The initial surgery was to perform an electrode mapping of Emmett's brain to find where the focus  of the seizures were coming from. They discovered that there was an abnormality, about the size of a small egg, on the right frontal lobe. Katie and Steve made the difficult decision to have the abnormality removed from Emmett's brain in hopes of seizure freedom. The second surgery to perform the removal took place on September 23rd. The surgeons removed 5% of Emmett's brain and sent the abnormality to pathology for testing.

Both surgeries went very well. One of the side effects of the surgery was that Emmett's entire left side would be hardly functional. Knowing this was a risk, Emmett was then admitted to an intensive rehab regime at Children's Hospital in Detroit. For the next few weeks, Katie and Emmett will be staying in the hospital because Emmett has a daily schedule consisting of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, and recreational therapy. Steve has had to return to work but makes the drive to the hospital every day when he gets off.

How You Can Help

Steve works full time while Katie, being a real life super hero, has been monitoring Emmett 24/7 for months. Please consider contributing to Katie and Steve's family as they are facing this challenging time. Your contribution would be used to cover their high medical expenses and other costs that may arise related to Emmett’s treatment and recovery.

Thank you all!
