Emma's Gold Award - Chicken Coop

Tax deductible
Dear Friends and Family,

My name is Emma Mings and I am a 15-year-old Freshman at Fallbrook High School. This is now my 10th year in Girl Scouts and I am currently trying to earn the Gold Award but I need your help!

Last summer, after much consideration, I decided to build a chicken coop for The Rock Rose School for Creative Learning to earn my Silver Award. The Rock Rose School of Creative Learning is a non-profit school here in Fallbrook, that has over 40 students. They have a wonderful garden for the preschool, but it seemed something was missing, chickens!

In August, we found a family that had a chicken coop they no longer wanted and they offered to donate it, all we had to do was to pick it up. It wasn’t as easy as it sounded! We needed the help of 10 adults (including 2 very fit marines), a 4x4 truck and a flat bed. It was a long afternoon, but we did it! The coop is now on the property. Chickens arrived in November from a Rock Rose Military family that was relocated to St. Louis for 18 months. They asked if Rock Rose could “babysit” their 12 chickens while they are gone. The children are enjoying their new chickens. They are cleaning the coop, feeding them compost and collecting eggs! The children learn about ecology, caring for animals and are able to see where their food comes from.

I am so happy I was able help provide the school with the coop, but in order to earn the Gold Award I want to create an animal encousure that will be a safe environment for not only the children but the chickens too!

The coop is now in an open field behind their current garden. As you see in the photo, there is a very busy road to the left and a ravine to the right where some wildlife resides.

A family in the school found a wonderful deal for 90 feet of fence for $900 plus $200 per gate, they need 2 gates.  I would also like to purchase a big shade tree for the area as well.

At the same time, I am also working on raising money for a gopher, rabbit, and squirrel barrier around the original garden space - the materials and trencher will be about $600.

Please consider making a donation to Rock Rose School on my behalf.   I really think this would be a great benefit for all of the children and families at the school!

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the chicken coop fencing.

The Rock Rose School is a non-profit, tax exempt 501 (c) (3) educational organization - Tax ID #26-1696796
