Emma's Battle with Bone Cancer

Donation protected
For most of us May 1st, 2015 will be remembered as just an ordinary day but for Emma and her family what happened on that day changed their lives.
Emma, who is just 18, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer.

Just five months earlier Emma had given birth to a beautiful daughter, Casey-Lee. During the last two weeks of her pregnancy Emma began getting pain in her right hip and struggled to walk. The doctors believed that Casey-Lee was pressing on a nerve, so naturally everyone thought the pain would go away after she was born, but it didn’t.

Emma had numerous amounts of X-Rays, MRI's and CT scans on her hip to confirm what the problem was. The doctors then believed that Emma’s hip had dislocated during childbirth. She began physiotherapy, but unfortunately it didn't help. She was then treated by a Chiropractor, who then referred her to specialists, with the thought that surgery would correct the problem.

On April 30th Emma had a PET scan and twenty minutes after leaving she was called by the nurse, who told her she needed to come back the next morning. The next morning, along with her parents and her baby daughter, she was given the devastating news.

Now Emma starts the next part of her journey. The treatment for this very aggressive type of cancer includes chemotherapy and radical surgery, which will span a minimum of 8 months. During Chemotherapy she won’t be able to provide full care to Casey-Lee as the Chemotherapy drugs are toxic to her. This means that Emma’s Mum, Janine will continue to be the main carer for both Emma and Casey-Lee. Janine recently battled breast cancer herself and after a Mastectomy is still recovering from her own ordeal. Janine has had to give up her casual work as a teacher’s aid to support Emma and Casey-Lee.

Emma’s father, Graham will be with her during her Chemo treatments, resulting in him taking leave without pay as he used all of his leave to support Janine while she was undergoing surgery and rehabilitation for her breast cancer. The next year or so is going to be a really hard time for Emma and her family, both emotionally and financially.

Everyone who knows Emma knows what an incredibly strong, positive and beautiful human being she is. We’ve created this page to support our girl and to help ease the financial burden of everyday expenses. That way Emma and her family can focus on what’s most important right now, and that’s getting Emma better!

Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated and will all go towards supporting Emma, Janine and Graham as they give everything they’ve got to beat this hideous disease. Whether you’re able to donate or not, please share Emma’s story.
