Emma's De Paz Unjust Arrest: Rally for Her Release Of ICE

Emma came to this country 25 years ago, fleeing the persecution and violence that devastated our beloved Guatemala. She arrived with empty hands, without knowing English, but with a heart full of hope and courage. In the beginning, she struggled to find work, but that didn’t stop her. She began selling whatever she could, fighting every single day to get ahead.

Over time, she not only built a network of sincere friendships within the community, but she also became aware of the injustices that many around her were experiencing. Emma chose not to stand by and do nothing. She became an activist for street vendors, advocating for their rights, and a strong voice in community meetings—with councilmembers, with the police, and in various organizations—always standing up for justice and dignity for the most vulnerable. Because of her dedication and commitment, she is now recognized as a tireless community leader.

Sadly, that very dedication has been cruelly punished. Emma was unjustly and cowardly arrested by the federal government. She was treated like a criminal, without cause, and her basic human rights were denied. It breaks our hearts to see a woman who has only ever shown love, resistance, and solidarity be treated with such deep injustice.

We have the support of Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, the organization Poder Colectivo, and the Guatemalan Consulate, as well as many other voices who recognize her work and service to the community. But now more than ever, we need your help. Legal expenses to secure her release are high, and any contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to having her back—where she belongs: with her family and her community.

Emma llegó a este país hace 25 años, huyendo de la persecución y la violencia que azotaban nuestra querida Guatemala. Llegó con las manos vacías, sin saber inglés, pero con el corazón lleno de esperanza y valentía. Al principio, le costaba encontrar trabajo, pero eso no la detuvo. Empezó vendiendo lo que podía, luchando día a día por salir adelante.

Con el tiempo, no solo formó una red de amistades sinceras dentro de la comunidad, sino que también abrió los ojos ante las injusticias que vivían muchos a su alrededor. Emma decidió no quedarse de brazos cruzados. Se convirtió en una activista de vendedores ambulantes abogando por su derechos y una voz activa en reuniones comunitarias, con concejales, con la policía y en diversas organizaciones, siempre buscando justicia y dignidad para los más vulnerables. Gracias a su entrega y compromiso, hoy es reconocida como una líder comunitaria incansable.

Lamentablemente, esa misma entrega ha sido castigada de forma cruel. Emma fue arrestada por el gobierno federal de manera injusta y cobarde. La trataron como si fuera una criminal, sin motivo alguno y no le hicieron valer sus derechos como persona. Nos duele el alma ver a una mujer que solo ha sembrado amor, lucha y solidaridad, ser tratada con tanta injusticia.

Contamos con el apoyo de el concejal Hugo Soto-Martínez, la organización de Poder Colectivo, y el consulado Guatemalteco También muchas otras voces que la reconocen por su labor a la comunidad. Pero ahora más que nunca, necesitamos de tu ayuda. Los gastos legales para liberarla son altos, y cualquier aportación, por pequeña que sea, nos acerca más a tenerla de vuelta, donde pertenece: con su comunidad y su familia.
