This summer while James was training in Georgia, Whitney drove from their home in Amarillo, TX with Callie, Emma and Tripp to spend time in Warsaw with her family and friends.
On June 26, Emma had a series of four seizures within a 24 hour period during her summer vacation in the Northern Neck. She was taken to the ER at VCU’s Children’s Hospital where they performed multiple tests over a six day period including an EEG and MRI.
The MRI immediately showed a large mass on her brain covering majority of her right temporal lobe, which was later confirmed as a brain tumor. After her biopsy, Emma lost fine motor control on her left side, but is slowly regaining strength.
Because of how large and where the brain tumor is located, neurosurgeons can’t attempt to remove it. Emma is in the process of transferring to Oklahoma City Children’s Hospital: Pediatric Brain Tumor Center where she will undergo chemotherapy once a week for the next 15 months. Although she will be getting the best care, OKC Children’s Hospital is a 3.5 hour drive each way from where her family lives in Amarillo.
Emma is and continues to be a ray of light. She loves everything outdoors, finding bugs and insects, and everything leopard/cheetah print. Her little body has fought hard during her three short years of life. Soon after her first birthday, she had cranial vault reconstruction where a portion of her skull was removed and reshaped due to premature fusion of her right lambdoid suture (which is in no way related to this brain tumor), so we know she will fight her way through this!
Originally from Warsaw, James has served in the Air Force the past 11 years. He currently works as a criminal investigator specializing in child exploitation and human trafficking. Whitney is a stay at home Mom to Emma’s older sister, best friend and confidant, Callie who is six and baby brother, Tripp who just turned one. Her family asks for all of your support through prayer, positive thoughts, and healing energy. Although they have medical insurance, it will only cover a fraction of their upcoming medical costs. However, any contributions shared can go a long way to help cover any expenses incurred as a result of Emma’s diagnosis.
