For those who are not aware my dearest friend Emma has recently undergone a full hysterectomy including the removal of the ovaries and the omentum brought on by the ‘Bertha’ aka cancer. The recent and sudden diagnosis is another blow for Emma as well as her family and friends.
About Emma
Emma is a 38 year old nurse who is passionate about her role as a nurse in and outside of work. She works to help those in medical need or quite simply someone to talk to and cheer up. To shine the light on Emmas true nature, Emma quite literally saved Mauries life on the side of the freeway after crashing his car suffering a heart attack. Emma showcased her true role as a nurse and human being by watching the accident and then pulling over and applying CPR to bring him back to this world. She’s a lifesaver. She has always been that person you call at all hours in need of anything and that can range from a recipe to medical advice to borrowing the old trestle table sitting in the garage. She has never failed to be there for her friends and family at the hardest of times and best of times. Emma always has a smile on her face and her positive nature truly spreads to those around. She never once complains and uses humour to overcome those hard times in life as we know it.

Medical History
Emma is an identical twin who they both opted to undergo a bilateral mastectomy after news was revealed they both carry the BRCA-1 gene which meant indefinite future diagnosis of breast, ovarian and/or bowel. To avoid the high possibility of cancer both Emma and her twin sister had both breasts removed when she was 28 years old followed by a reconstruction 12 months later. This was a very hard time for Emma and her family but in true style Emma trumped the prognosis and kept on keeping on with the the positive attitude and outlook and moved forward in life with a few bumps in the way.

The Bertha
In January of 2020 Emma was diagnosed with grade 2 ovarian cancer after booking herself in for a check up of a lump in her abdomen. Can’t this girl catch a break. Emma had the surgery recently for the removal of her reproductive organs. She was looking forward to the future of having children and now this chance has been sadly taken away from her by the ‘Bertha’. It was also discovered that Emma has now experienced surgically induced menapause recently which has added another layer to overcome. Emma’s doctors have ordered for her to have chemotherapy treatment which will run over the course of 5 months to finally rid of Bertha and her friends. For those who don’t know, chemotherapy poses risk of peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling), if severe Emma may not be able to nurse again.

The Support
I am organising this fundraiser as I know Emma will be having to deal with the financial strain of the ‘Bertha’. As we all know when we are sick we need to prepare ourselves financially and due to the costly expenses of surgery and ongoing 5 months of chemotherapy, I’d like to invite those to donate to Emma to reduce the stress and pressure so she can be fit and healthy through this difficult time. The money will be used to cover her medical expenses and living expenses over the course of 6 months and a slight portion will also be going towards a custom wig to make her feel better.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read Emma’s story and I also plea to those out there, if something’s not right with yourself and you are noticing change to your body please go get a check up. It could spare you.
