Emmalyn is a beautiful, spirited six year old. She was very recently diagnosed with Leukemia after months of being off and on sick. Em has a loving family, who now need help. Erik and Shauna have the huge task of raising their three kids, two households, and now travel to Greenbay for treatment. Shauna had to leave work entirely to care for Em.
So let’s help out this beautiful family!
Shauna wrote Emmalyns diagnoses story here:
“Emmalyn update for those of you following along, this is going to be rather long, so bear with me.
Back at the end of October Emmalyn got sick, which has been a reoccurring theme pretty much since she started school, We took her to our primary doctor and found out she had strep throat. They took some blood to test for Mono because of her symptoms - high fevers, crazy tired, and bad tummy aches mostly. While we found out that she did NOT have Mono, her white blood cell count came back very low and her blood was sent to Oncology/Hematology for further testing. They said it was wonky, but wanted another blood draw after she finished her antibiotics for strep.
We came back right after she finished her antibiotics, and her fevers were still persistent, with only a day or so with normal temps. She was still getting up to 104 WITH ibuprofen. This was on December 2nd. Her blood testing that day shows that her WBC was even lower and we went sent to Oncology for an appointment on the 5th, she was also started on a second round of antibiotics to make sure there was no lingering infection. When examining her, they decided they wanted to do a biopsy of the swollen lymph nodes in her neck and we were referred to and ENT to get that done.
December 11th was her appointment with the ENT, she woke up screaming that her belly hurt and she had a fever of 101. She cried though the entirety of her ENT appointment, Oncology wanted us to call if symptoms persisted. I called them, reported what was going on and they had us come in ASAP.
When we got there, Her Oncologist, Dr. Green-Murphy, found that her spleen was swollen, and she had a whole bunch of bruising, and spotting on her legs. Emmalyn was sent for an ultrasound on her spleen and had more labs drawn. With in a few hours we were admitted to St. Vincent’s Children’s Hospital in Green Bay. She had developed blasts in her blood cells which is indicative of Leukemia, her liver enzymes were 10x what they were supposed to be, and her white blood cell count was so low that they were surprised she was up and moving about (Normal is 1,500 and Em’s are 150) Last night she got checked in to the hospital and they did 2 rounds of IV antibiotics. This morning (12/12/19) She had and EKG, a Heart/tummy ultrasound, and a bone marrow biopsy.
Today the Bone Marrow biopsy confirmed that Emmalyn has Leukemia. B Lymphoblastic Leukemia, to be specific.
Tomorrow she will get her port placed for chemo, have a spinal tap, and get her first round of chemo. We will be here in Green Bay for at least a week, and then go from there.
The GOOD news is that her specific type of Leukemia has a 98% remission rate.”
