Our Daughter, Emilynn, has been extremely sick. The following is the chain of events that have lead up to today. It all started January 11th, she came home from school not feeling well, fever and a cough. She missed one day of school preceding a 4 day weekend off from school. She was back to school the following Tuesday and seemed better, not fully, but well enough to return to school. Then Friday, February 3rd, she was home sick again with a fever and a cough. It didn’t get any better over the weekend, so on Monday I called her pediatrician to get her an appointment. Daddy took her to the pediatrician Tuesday and she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was prescribed an antibiotic and an in-hailer. She didn’t seem to be getting much better and her appearance was extremely concerning to my husband and myself. Last Thursday, February 9th we took her to the hospital at 4:30 am. They admitted her and took her down town to rainbow babies and children’s hospital. They monitored her overnight and the following day. On Saturday, February 11th, the pulmonary team took Emilynn about 7:30 am down to the OR to put in a chest tube to help drain the fluid in her right lung. They ran into an issue when they took her back. They didn't realize how badly damaged and thin the tissue in her right lung was. The pressure created with her coughing caused a pneumothorax. Her O2 levels dropped very low (15 out of 100) so they needed to intubate her. They were able to put in the chest tube to help drain the fluid. She was then taken to the pediatric ICU where she is currently. She is sedated and on a ventilator and still has the chest tube. At this point in time, she will be on the ventilator a few more days and in the hospital a few more weeks. She is a strong little girl and has already shown positive improvement despite the severity of her health. She has a long road ahead of her, but she will get there.
