Hello and thank you for stopping by to learn more about "Stories from the Source"!
I've been invited to join Picture Change in Nicaragua in May. I'm so excited about this opportunity but I can't do it without your help!
I've been a photographer for 16 years and this opportunity is something I've been searching for. To be able to empower people through photography has always been my intention. Whether it's by inspiring them with my story or teaching them to tell theirs, I've always used photography as a way to speak when words fail me.
To be able to travel to Nicaragua with Picture Change, and to be able to pass along my photography knowledge to a group of kids who will use it to better themselves and their community sounds like something out of a dream.
The money I raise here will fund my trip to Nicaragua, including travel, meals and lodging.
Here's a little more about what Picture Change is doing for the local community in Nicaragua:
"Many of the people in this area suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease, resulting in sickness and early death. This is a major contributor to the extreme poverty in the region. International media has been covering this epidemic for the past few years, but, for the first time, we are providing an opportunity for those living in the affected communities to share their perspective.
Picture Change will be providing local high school-age students with digital storytelling resources, eight weeks of photography training, and access to social media platforms to share the reality of their lives and community. This will not only foster confidence and leadership skills within the students, but also provide a pro-active way to play a role in how their story is told.
Students will have the opportunity to use their new skills in a “Giving Back Day,” where they will the provide the photography for family portraits in the community at no charge. Near the end of the project, we'll host two Gallery Showsof the students’ photography: one in the city of León, a major tourist location and university area, and the other in the students’ home town of Chichigalpa. This is a tangible way for the students to be celebrated and treated as professional photographers in addition to making their family and neighbors proud.
For the final week of training, the students will travel out of the area (some, for the first time) to the northern mountains of Nicaragua and participate in a creative service project utilizing their new photography skills to help others.
When I discussed this project with the communications director at a local aid organization, I said “We are going to teach them a new way to tell their own story.”
He replied, “That’s just it: no one has asked them to tell their story. It won’t be a new way, it will be the first time anyone has asked.”
Give the gift of story. Give the gift of hope. This project has the opportunity to become the gift of a better life for the youth of Chichigalpa."
Whether you can give $1, $10, $100 or $1,000 - every little bit will help in so many ways.
Thanks again for stopping by and reading about this amazing organization!
