Emily and David Goen's Medical Expenses

Doação protegida
Hello,

My name is Beth Lasher, I am Emily's sister. On April 3, Emily went to the ER just outside of Nashville where she lives, because she just wasn't feeling great and her legs were swollen. Over the next 48 hours several health concerns were discovered and she landed in the ICU on a ventilator on Tuesday, April 5.

The next week her body fought the hardest fight ever as David, her husband and his mother (who came from her home in Ohio), stood by her side encouraging her and working with the ICU staff to discover what exactly was going on and how they could treat it.

They have discovered that Emily has a very special anatomy and her organs are a little squished. They have told her she also has some Pulmonary Hypertension.

After many doctors and days on a ventilator, as well as a lot of thought and careful consideration, Emily and David decided to proceed with the recommendation of a Tracheostomy. This is a procedure where a small tube is placed at the base of her neck and connected to her trachea. It will allow proper airflow in and out of her lungs.

On her birthday, April 12, the procedure was done and was very successful. They discovered a few days prior that her trachea actually has a large curve in it and they feel this could have been causing some of her problems as well.

On Thursday, April 14, we learned Emily would be transferring to a specialty facility in downtown Nashville, about 30 miles from her home and the hospital she was at. This facility will start her recovery process with all the physicians, therapy and training she will need for the next step. She will be here 21-30 days is the rough guess. To our surprise she was transferred Friday afternoon! While this was great, it was a fast transition so she and David are still adjusting.

Being further from home is a challenge, but David and his amazing mother are working out the schedule to be sure they are there to support, encourage, and learn themselves what's needed to keep her recovery moving. Emily will have a long road of recovery. This is not something that will mend or heal its self quickly.

A very rough timeline was given today and will be up for change as she progresses and her care team helps determine what is best. What we know at this point is, the next step will be more care and rehab possibly inpatient or outpatient but she will need continued medical care for sometime.

As she and David focus on this they know the medical bills and finances will be beyond what they could have planned for.

Emily, David and our families had not considered a fundraiser, but several people have asked how they can help and we feel this is the best way. Any funds donated will be going directly to offset the current and future expenses they will have. The goal is to help Emily eventually get back home or into a home that will allow her to have as much independence as she can have.

We do not know what the future holds but we do know Who holds the future. Regardless of whether you donate or not, please keep Emily and David, as well as our families, in prayer as we navigate this journey.
