Hi, my name is Emily and I am raising funds for myself. I am a single mother, trying to parent 2 boys amidst the aftershock of a second spinal injury and chronic pain and mental health challenges. Due to disablilty, I have not been able to take on a job to provide for us. Our housing situation will soon be a housing crisis if I am not able to be assessed for AISH, which is permanent support so that I can pay for housing. I have been living with my parents in their basement suite, and they have helped me through my difficulties, however, this past Christmas season my father took a turn for the worse, and is fading out after a long battle with cancer, and was forced into retirement. His pension isn’t sufficient for them to pay the mortgage and my mother alone, cannot afford to keep the home we are living in. The doctors gave him 6 months to live. I need to pay for a private professional assessment out of pocket as soon as possible. I have been on a doctor referred wait list for nearly 9 months with no opening in sight for the needed assessment. Come May, my mother is planning to list the house for sale. The wait time of an AISH application takes 3-4 months alone to process. If I am not assessed immediately, my children and I will be facing a homeless shelter. Unfortunately, Calgary housing wait times are 5 years at this present time.
