Emilie, Chayse & baby Kai

Chayse and Emilie are having their first baby! However recently Emilie and baby Kai have endured some unexpected medical conditions. Emilie is now admitted to the hospital until she delivers. Below is a message from Emilie about everything so far.
It’s been an interesting couple of months here regarding baby Kai. Chayse and I have had some time to talk with family and close friends to share some information and we feel we’ve had enough time to share with others some of the information we know.
Thankfully Chayse and I were referred to a speciality clinic in the cities, Midwest Perinatal Physicians, for an ultrasound due to the techs at Hudson not being able to get good pictures of Kai’s heart. We went in a couple of weeks ago for that appointment and it’s been a lot to process since. They let us know that Kai has two congenital heart defects. *Hopefully only one*
The first one is a complete balanced atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD or AV Canal) which means he has a hole is the middle of his heart as it didn’t develop and form the correct way and it has been this way since week 10. He also has only one valve where there should be two.
The other defect is a *maybe* we’re doing further tests to determine. This one is called coarctation of the aorta, and this means his upper aortic valve is kinked.
The first defect will need to be corrected with open heart surgery when he is 3-6 months old. The second, if he does indeed have it, will need to be corrected with a ballon being placed into his heart valve to “blow up” that kink the day he is born.
Thankfully both defects are treatable and the cardiologist feels very confident she will fix both issues.
We have many more appointments with specialists and are getting the best care for our son.
In the meantime, enjoy some photos of our perfect boy
