Hi, my name is Emile Myers, and I’m a first-generation college student from Miami, Florida, currently pursuing a dual degree in Political Science and Business at UC Berkeley.
Getting into Berkeley was the biggest blessing of my life. I packed everything I had and moved across the country alone, determined to make the most of this opportunity. I had a plan. I had savings. I was ready to do whatever it took.
But life doesn’t always go according to plan.
When my younger brother was diagnosed with cancer, everything changed. Without hesitation, a large portion of the money my family had set aside for my college tuition went toward covering his hospital expenses. I don’t regret that choice for a second — family always comes first. But it left me in an incredibly vulnerable position, especially as an out-of-state student living on my own in California.
Since then, I’ve explored every possible avenue to cover the cost of staying in school. I’ve worked jobs during the summer, applied to countless scholarships, reached out to financial aid, and even applied for a loan — but was denied. I’ve taken on whatever I could to try and make it work. And I’m still doing those things now — applying, working, and asking — because I haven’t given up on this dream.
Some really amazing things have happened along the way. I was offered a Resident Assistant position for next year, which would significantly ease my housing costs — but that opportunity depends on me staying enrolled and in good academic standing. I’ve also had people reach out with mentorship, scholarship leads, and advice on how to keep pushing forward.
And I’m fighting to stay because I love what I’m doing here. I’m majoring in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, and I was recently accepted into the Haas School of Business, where I’ll be pursuing a second major in Business Administration.
Beyond the classroom, I’ve thrown myself into campus life. I serve on the board for the Nigerian Student Association, I’ve been involved in student government through the ASUC and the Residence Hall Assembly, I’m a proud member of Cal Spirit, and I’ve even worked behind the scenes as a manager for the Women’s Basketball Team.
Berkeley isn’t just where I study — it’s where I’ve built community, grown as a leader, and started becoming the person I’ve always hoped to be.
I just need a little help staying in the place I’ve worked so hard to reach.
That’s why I’m humbly asking for help. I’m raising money to cover the cost of tuition, books, housing, and other essentials so I can stay enrolled this upcoming term. Anything you’re able to give — whether it’s $5 or just a share — truly makes a difference. Every dollar brings me closer to staying in school and continuing to build the future I’ve worked so hard for.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for believing in me. And thank you for helping me hold onto a dream I refuse to give up on.
With gratitude,
Emile Myers
