UPDATE #4 (FINAL):
Hello everyone. My family and I want to thank you from the very bottom of our hearts. The support of this campaign allowed us to cover a portion of the veterinary bills for our Finn. Finn did end up having a revision surgery. He's been recovering really well, and should be cone-free in the next few weeks, and back to cuddling and play-fighting with his brother like before. By all accounts, he is now back on the road to good health. As mentioned, we are incredibly grateful for the support you've shown us and the generosity of those who contributed, as well as the thoughts and prayers sent our way. We have paused donations and will be deactivating the campaign shortly (once everyone has had the chance to read the update).
With warmest regards,
Finn and his family
UPDATE #3:
Hello everyone. Thank you so so much for the support you've given so far - we are incredibly grateful. It has been a difficult time on our end - thank you for your patience in receiving an update. We are asking for your continued support to help us with the ongoing costs for our Finn. So far, we have been billed over $14,000 for his care, and we will continue to do everything we can for him. I'm adding the receipts and estimates below for transparency. I have blocked out our personal information as well as the information of the veterinarians involved on the receipts.
So much has happened - We've been very diligent with his post-op care, but he has unfortunately ran into some complications after surgery. I'll list the events in point form so it's easier to follow. Since the last update (Update #2);
- Finn had another blockage. We returned to the emergency with him,
- Finn received a PU surgery (a surgery which alters his anatomy so that he can pass urine). The surgery went relatively well, and he was brought home to recover,
- Following his surgery, Finn has faced a complicated recovery. He needed to return once for a check-up and to re-size his cone, because the cone he had was irritating his incision site when he tried to groom his fur. Once he returned home, he had very little urine output and was not having good BM's,
- We've been actively in discussion with the surgeon post-op. Unfortunately this situation was made more difficult by the fact that it's happening over the holidays, which means reduced hours and less access to services,
- On Christmas day, we returned to emergency because we felt that Finn was not expelling enough urine and we were concerned about his lack of good BM's. He had a concerning level of constipation. He had an enema and we brought him home with other bowel related medication,
- On December 30th, we brought him back to emergency. He still had some constipation, but the real concern was that his urethra had narrowed and he was unable to empty his bladder. He has been admitted, he has a catheter and is receiving all necessary care to help empty his bladder and get him back on track. As a result of the holidays and for his own well-being, he'll be staying at the hospital (with the catheter) until we can meet with the surgeon on Monday to discuss next steps, including a potential revision surgery.
Truly, we are incredibly grateful for the support we have received so far. We are sharing these updates to be as transparent as possible with how Finn is doing. He is young and he's a fighter, and we want to do everything we can to help him while prioritizing his quality of life. Thank you so much for your consideration in supporting this campaign.
In kindness,
Emily
UPDATE #2:
Hello everyone. Recently, we reached out with our first update to thank you for having donated to this campaign. We also mentioned that we would update you all once he came home. At that time, we paused donations for this campaign. We were able to bring him home, but his recovery has been rocky. Unfortunately, we've had to bring him back to emergency. Tomorrow, we will get more information on next steps and where we go from here. I will update you all as soon as possible in the next 24hrs. We will be sharing the receipts to share what these funds have been used for so far (for transparency), and we have re-opened donations as, unfortunately, we are anticipating a much larger procedure in the near future.
Thank you again for your support and care. It is difficult to find the words for how much this means to us.
-Emily
ORIGINAL POST:
Hello everyone, we’re reaching out for your help in paying for an emergency vet bill for our 2yr old cat, Finn.
Yesterday, we noticed one of our young cats (Finn, photos above) was having difficulty with urinary output, and we immediately called our vet. We were instructed to go straight to emergency as it was life-threatening - which we did. He’s been admitted and is actively receiving treatment. We are very diligent, experienced caretakers and are very aware of the importance of proper diet and hydration for male cats. He is an otherwise healthy, energetic and loving young cat. Unfortunately, stress can contribute to inflammation and blockages in male cats urinary tracks, and our Finn is a very anxious cat. This sudden blockage was very unexpected.
Our finances have been limited this year due to sudden illness in the family. While we were able to cover the initial deposit of the veterinary care with our savings, it has put an even larger strain on our finances and we are concerned for the final part of the payment/balance owing.
We’ve created this Go Fund Me to ask for community support to help with the cost of the emergency veterinary care and to help pay the rest of the bill. We love these cats so much, they have brought so much joy into all of our hearts, during some very difficult times. We are very grateful for your time in reading this and thank you for your consideration.
We will post updates once he is home safe and on his healing journey.
Note: I (Emily) have launched this campaign on behalf of our family. The beneficiaries are my parents, who handle payment of veterinary care for our family animals.
Sweet facts about Finn:
1) He and his brother (Tommy) sleep face-to-face,
2) Finn likes to play fetch,
3) Finn sleeps on his back with all of his paws up
4) Finn and Tommy were rescue kittens. Though not biological siblings, they grew up together since they were only weeks old.
