on saturday, may 18th, my cat and documented support animal hestia swallowed a sewing needle and thread. i immediately rushed her to the animal hospital, where we spent the next five hours.

eventually the veterinary surgeon decided that the best course of action was a surgical intervention to remove the needle. after surgery in the early hours of sunday morning, hestia is stable and in good condition. her prognosis is great, and i'm excited to take her home monday morning.
unfortunately, the surgery, hospital stay, monitoring, and several sets of x-rays were overwhelmingly expensive. to keep hestia safe and alive and happy, it is absolutely worth it, but it creates a huge financial burden for me and my family, especially as i am already struggling to balance a tricky and expensive apartment move.
i adopted hestia in my second year of college to be my companion and emotional support animal. my therapist agreed that having a cat — something to care for and to care for me — could make a huge difference in my emotional wellbeing. when i left college suddenly at the start of my junior year, hestia came with me, first home, and then to a series of apartments in chicago. she has been a warm, kind, and rude little constant.

i fell in love with hestia as soon as i saw her. she is my dear friend and also the most effective resource i've ever had to help me navigate my mental illness. i can't say how much hestia means to me, or what a difference she's made in my life, or the comfort and support she's offered me. i can just say that i love her so much, and i have been so worried about her, and i need your help to pay for her care, so that she can go back to being the world's tiniest menace.

the initial cost for medical care, x-rays, IV fluids, and observation was $1,500.
the estimated cost for surgery to remove the needle from her small intestine was $5,000.
emergency transportation costs to and from the animal hospital were $44.
if you are comfortably able to help us, i would be so grateful.

love always from auden and hestia.
