Emergency Vet Care for Rescued Dogs
Donation protected
Two days ago I made a split decision to rescue these 2 dogs as they were going to be put to sleep and they no longer had a purpose as their owner used them as gun dogs and no longer shoots so they just left in the cage.
They were in a cage and no one around could remember the last time they had seen them out of it, they stunk of urine and their fur was so matted but the spirit in their eyes spoke to my heart.
I got them home and with the help of my kind neighbour and they got bathed and he helped me introduce them to my dogs, then I was up all night cutting the mats out of the fur so they could hear and have full mobility as their ears and legs were matted, only to my shock to find lumps that I can’t lie, I was concerned about. The next morning after 2 hours sleep I got them booked in at the vets for a health check. I know if I had waited and got them insure I could have got help but they needed help immediate not in a month so any insurance policy would cover
Then the results came in and I was in floods of tears, one has a tumour on her teat and needs her mammary gland removed and possibly spaying to ensure her a good future. There is evidence that she damaged her cruciate ligament but it too old to do anything and she seems to be ok for now with that.
The other had a solid mass in his testicle and the other is missing so need to be opened up to find the other. He is also emaciated and is half the weight he should be and you can feel all his ribs and spine and he has no muscles at all.
In 48 hours our lives have been turned upside down but it is obvious they now feel safe and loved and my dogs seem to know and share their beds and toys and have completely welcomed them into the family. I have got them new collars, leads, beds, toys, food, feed, had them wormed, flea treatments, nails trimmed and booked in for vaccinations and all future care.
They both will need dental work but the vet advised too risky to do at same time as will increase the risk of infection for them. So that can wait until they through surgery for the immediate needs until we do that.
The vets have been beyond amazing as the quotes for the treatment that needs to be done as a priority was in the region of £8,000 and the have offered support and I need to find £2,500 but this is caveated with if spaying is needed and is the cancer has spread to far in one the cost of putting him to sleep will be extra.. Hence the aim of £3000 to cover the what if scenarios that may arise, any funds over the medical costs will be used for these dogs only. Rehabilitation and any needs they may have.
The dental work and follow ups will be determined and priced by the outcomes of the initial findings once they able to see inside.
They now have a home for life and the costs that come with loving dogs are all being factored into my budget but I am not financially in position to cover this unexpected amount but these dogs deserve a chance..
The blue cross has offered £250 per dog to help and I am speaking with other charities to assist. I have also got a payment plan to spread the costs over 3 months to assist me as no matter what I will do what’s best for these dogs.
I am creating this page as my neighbours and friends want to support and said they feel others would want to help, if I did a go fund me page. The overwhelming offer of support once people have met these dogs has been heart warming.
In the last 48 hours I have hardly slept as you can imagined when you feed dogs with malnutrition what goes in can come out very quickly and my washing machine is constantly on to keep up with accidents through no fault of they own - but I can honestly the tail wags and affection I am getting back makes it all worth it..
They are both already, playing with toys and smiling as only spaniels do lol, it’s like they know they are now safe and loved.
I totally appreciate the cost of living is hitting us all hard and I know I took them on and I will find a way no matter what as I am not blessed with children so animals are my fur babies.
Its ok if you can’t help, just give them a cuddle if we meet and if you only have a spare £1, I promise it will make a difference.
If anyone wants me to provide regular updates I am happy to find a platform to do this or connect with people about them. Obviously right now my priority is to get them healthy and settled.
I have to be honest this is my first time doing an go fund me and I was nervous that I would get negative posts. I am an open book and happy to share any updates, invoices or meet/ speak to anyone who has questions. This is an ask to help with emergency vet care. I am fully prepared for the journey and supporting them going forward for their the rest of the life that have..
In all honesty anyone that knows me when it comes to animals, I will do whatever it takes to help them. It was only neighbours, friends, colleagues even strangers that had heard their story and met us on our many walks that advised me to post this as they said people would want to help if they knew..
Hopefully the last picture show the difference a good bath and groom has done for them already xx
