Emergency treatment...save Javed's feet
Donation protected
A lot of you BT tour customers will recognise that massive smile.
For more than 10 years Javed has worked across India, Nepal and Sikkim supporting motorbike adventures and has always gone above and beyond to keep us going over mountains and through meltwater. Much of it behind the scenes or while everyone is cracking open their first beer after a great day riding.
Beyond the professional and charming guy we see on tour, Javed is a young man from a small village in Lucknow. He is 1 of 8 children, and for most of his life has been the main provider for his family, starting work at the age of 13, and working hard to learn English and becoming an invaluable team member for Blazing Trails.
In March this year, whilst couriering motorbikes across India, Javed was involved in a catastrophic lorry accident. The driver was lucky to walk away uninjured, but Javed is lucky to be alive, and to still have his legs.
He sustained masses of damage to his feet. After begging a surgeon to save his feet so he could continue to work as a mechanic on tour, he underwent emergency surgery at a government hospital earlier in the year and stayed in Delhi for 3 months of bed rest, in what is essentially a corridor of a friend's house, with a commode. I visited him in July and he can just about walk, after months of pain and determination.
Unfortunately, while I was there he was experiencing the beginning of further devastating complications and is now struggling with a bone infection called Osteomyelitis. Further surgery and 6 weeks of daily IV treatment will be required to save his foot. The government hospitals won't do this, so he needs private treatment. This will likely cost beyond a thousand pounds - money that Javed just doesn’t have. Particularly as he needs to pay rent to his friend, buy food, and survive day to day - no benefits in India !
If anyone can help, even the smallest donation, could be a lifesaver for Javed to help him start his treatment journey. We really hope to get him back on his feet and off on adventures again soon!
Thank you all
