Hi everyone, we’re Marije and Rene. We’ve been renting a small home in Union Hall, West Cork since September 2023. On Sunday night the 7th of December, our lives were turned upside down.
A sudden freak storm, some called it a tornado, others a downburst, hit our house with full force. I (Marije) was home alone with our dogs, as Rene was away for work. I had just gone to bed when a massive flash lit up the room and thunder cracked right over us. As I walked toward the living room, the whole house shook and parts of the ceiling collapsed. I grabbed the dogs, switched off the electricity and got out as fast as I could. There was no time to take anything.
The next morning, seeing the home in daylight was a shock. The roof had opened in several places, rain had poured in all night, and we realised we had effectively lost our home. We’re incredibly grateful to friends who took us in for the first few nights, and to a kind woman from Kilkenny who offered us her holiday home to rent for the next four weeks. Thanks to them, we at least have a dry, warm place to stay over the holidays.
Unfortunately, while our landlord’s insurance covers the building, it doesn’t cover our personal belongings. Water has ruined our mattresses, clothes, electronics, and many of the essentials we rely on every day. We’re now trying to replace what was lost and find a new stable home.
If you’re able to help us get back on our feet, we would be deeply grateful. Any support, big or small means more than we can say.
Thank you for reading and for any kindness you can offer.
