My childhood best friend’s family owns a small, family-run restaurant, El Pobre, which has been a cornerstone of the Enka/Waynesville/Canton community for years. The heart of the restaurant is husband & father, Ricardo, who serves as the primary cook and kitchen staff.

Recently, Ricardo was involved in car accident and is currently hospitalized while undergoing neurological evaluations. The restaurant has been closed since November 24,2025. During this incredibly difficult time, the family is facing not only the emotional stress of his recovery, but also the financial strain of keeping their restaurant and household afloat.

This family would never ask for help themselves, but they have always shown up for others. El Pobre holds so many core memories for me—and for many others—through our middle school and high school years. They have worked tirelessly and faced countless challenges as small business owners, always with resilience and heart.
