Hello, my name is Effy, and I live in Asheville, NC. I’m a regular at the Tunnel Road Waffle House, where my dear friend and chosen family member Angela Thornley has worked for the past four years. Altogether, Angela has dedicated 31 years of her life to Waffle House — showing up, caring for people, and working harder than anyone I’ve ever known.

What Happened

Last week, Angela was in a collision with a deer that completely totaled her car. Only a week later, while working her shift at Waffle House, she slipped on ice and fell. The next morning she woke up crying in pain and was rushed to Mission Hospital, where doctors discovered a gallbladder stone and told her she needed emergency surgery. On top of that, she is now battling a blood infection.

Angela is in pain, overwhelmed, and desperately wants to be home with the children she cares for.

Who She Is

Angela is the guardian of her five grandchildren, ages 1 through 6. She is an extraordinary protector, provider, and source of stability for them.

She is also the heart of her Waffle House crew — her coworkers lovingly call her “Mama.” For us regulars, she is warmth, humor, compassion, and love. Waffle House is my second home because Angela is there.

Why We’re Raising Money

Angela does not have medical insurance and has been struggling to secure food stamps for the children. Her car was totaled, so she now faces car payments on a replacement vehicle. Her medical crisis is already becoming financially devastating, and she cannot work while she recovers.

As a community, it’s our turn to give back a small piece of the love Angela has poured into Asheville for decades.
