Emergency Rent Support for John Ortiz

Hi, my name is John Ortiz, Kenyon College ‘22, and I recently moved to Santa Cruz, CA, to start my MFA in Social Documentation at UC Santa Cruz. As an immigrant in the United States, and coming from a very poor background, I am terrified of becoming homeless, so I’m reaching out to you. While I initially expected to cover my living expenses through the University’s financial aid, UC Santa Cruz has recently notified me that it could take up to 3 months to receive any economic support. On top of that, the first paycheck for my on-campus job won’t arrive until November, leaving me without enough money to afford rent and food during October. Housing in Santa Cruz is a colossal weight for graduate students, and as an immigrant, I don’t have the ability to find work outside of school, which is why I am reaching out to my community.
