My name is Ruben, I am from Cali Colombia and now live in Canada. My family continue to live in Cali and are working to help those most affected by the recent earthquake.

On Monday August 10th, 2026 a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing widespread destruction, leaving communities deep in crisis - many families have lost everything. The city of Cali and the surrounding towns are severely impacted, with collapsed buildings, displaced families, basic services disrupted, and urgent needs growing by the hour.

The people of Cali have come together and are providing ample food and water within the city. However these resources are lacking in the impoverished communities surrounding Cali. What is missing within the city is medical supplies for the professionals on the ground helping with rescue efforts and the care thereafter. This need has been amplified due to the partial-collapse of a major hospital.

How the funds will be used:

Every dollar raised will go directly to people on the ground via secure transfer so there will be no administrative costs.

Essential items such as: clean drinking water and non-perishable food, First-aid supplies, hygiene products, medicine, and temporary shelter supplies will go directly to affected families in surrounding towns. Additional funds will be used to help these impoverished families begin to rebuild essential structures such as bathrooms and cooking areas. These will be delivered by my father who has experience working in rural communities during his time with Red Cross. Medical supplies will be purchased and distributed to medical staff aiding in rescue efforts by Angela, a great friend who has been helping around Cali.

El lunes 10 de agosto de 2026, un potente terremoto de magnitud 7,4 sacudió el oeste de Colombia, causando una destrucción generalizada y dejando a las comunidades en una crisis profunda; muchas familias lo han perdido todo. La ciudad de Cali y sus alrededores se han visto gravemente afectados: hay edificios colapsados, familias desplazadas, servicios básicos interrumpidos y necesidades urgentes que aumentan a cada hora.

Los habitantes de Cali se han unido y están suministrando grandes cantidades de alimentos y agua dentro de la ciudad. Sin embargo, estos recursos escasean en las comunidades empobrecidas de los alrededores. Lo que falta en la ciudad son suministros médicos para los profesionales que trabajan sobre el terreno en las labores de rescate y la atención posterior. Esta necesidad se ha visto agravada por el colapso parcial de un hospital importante.

Cómo se utilizarán los fondos:

Cada dólar recaudado se destinará directamente a las personas sobre el terreno mediante transferencias seguras, por lo que no habrá gastos administrativos.

Artículos esenciales —como agua potable, alimentos no perecederos, suministros de primeros auxilios, productos de higiene, medicamentos y materiales para refugios temporales— llegarán directamente a las familias afectadas en las localidades vecinas. Los fondos adicionales se utilizarán para ayudar a estas familias de escasos recursos a comenzar a reconstruir estructuras esenciales, como baños y áreas de cocina. La entrega estará a cargo de mi padre, quien cuenta con experiencia trabajando en comunidades rurales gracias a su trayectoria en la Cruz Roja. Por su parte, Angela, una gran amiga que ha estado ayudando alrededor de Cali, se encargará de comprar y distribuir suministros médicos al personal sanitario que colabora en las labores de rescate.
