Emergency Refuge for Bambi

On October 14, 2025, I was driving in my truck and saw a fawn laying on the side of the road. Knowing this isn’t normal behavior for these animals, I stopped the vehicle and got out to check on it. When I got closer, I realized she had been most likely hit by a car and her back leg was practically severed and hanging from her body. She came right to me and I knew I had to try and help her, I loaded her up in my truck and started making phone calls to every rescue, refuge, and sanctuary I could find on google. Unfortunately, everywhere I called was either at capacity, didn’t have the resources available, or are just closed due to the government shut down. Luckily my daughter was able to get in touch with a small animal hospital in Brunswick that was willing to evaluate her and see if they could help. After her exam, the vets determined she’s only about 4 months old and overall completely healthy other than her very obvious injury. The vet has agreed to treat the fawn, that we’ve lovingly started calling Bambi, and is currently amputating her back leg. Given the situation and lack of available resources, the financial responsibility of the surgery and her rehabilitation care has been placed in the hands of my wife and I. I am currently in the process of obtaining a permit from the state to provide a permanent sanctuary for Bambi where she can live a happy life and thrive, whereas she wouldn’t stand a chance in the wild. We own a small family farm, saving animals and caring for them has always been our life’s calling and we’ve never turned anything away. I have never asked for help from anyone, for any situation in my life- but I’m coming to the community and all other animal lovers this one time for it. The cost of the surgery and follow up care alone is in the thousands, one of our enclosed pastures will have to be reinforced and higher fences will have to be built to ensure her safety and survival. I understand a majority of the population would agree nature should’ve taken its course but my heart wouldn’t ever let me let an animal die because of a humans actions, especially one so young. Any donation, no matter how big or small, or just a share would make all the difference in the world and we’d be forever thankful to everyone that helped us give Bambi the chance at the life she deserves.
