Help Sandra and her family get out of an unjust and dangerous housing situation!
Sandra rents a house with her two daughters and is pregnant with her third baby. Last summer, after caretaking for his elderly mother for years, her now landlord offered Sandra and her family a deal--if they do free labor (clean up the property and do minor maintenance) he would rent them the housing they badly needed for a fair price.
Over the next few months, Sandra and her teenage daughters performed manual labor in the hot sun, even spending thousands of their own dollars on cleaning supplies, paint, maintenance equipment, etc. The landlord promised he would pay them back for their costs, which ended up amounting to thousands of dollars.
The family moved in to the house in September. We come to find out that we were mislead about many things by the landlord in the lease… example the house didn’t have working smoke detectors (those smoke detectors where to be replaced back in 2016), there was no A/C, the lease said there were 4 bedrooms when in reality there is only 3 bedrooms, The air conditioning was not installed for over two months after moving in causing Sandra's youngest to have major difficulties with her asthma in the heat.
The water that comes out of the tap is dirty and foul smell and the landlord has repeatedly threatened to evict the family, or worse, because they ask him to make repairs. The landlord has refused to pay them back for costs they've incurred, leaving them more than $7,000 in debt and unable to afford the costs of moving or legal help. With the landlord's threats escalating, Sandra and her growing family need to relocate now. Please give what you can to help Sandra and her family move to a safe and stable living situation!
