Help Bring Gary Hopper Home to Canada, Medical Emergency

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

We are reaching out during an incredibly frightening and overwhelming moment for our family.

Earlier this week, our dad, Gary Hopper was seriously injured while traveling in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. While navigating the busy streets on his bike, it is believed he experienced a medical incident, causing him to fall. After the fall, he was helped to the side of the road, and a local resident rushed him to the hospital.

Gary initially spent two nights in the ICU before being moved to a regular ward. Although his vital signs were stable, doctors diagnosed him with a brain contusion and a subdural hematoma. Communication with Gary has been extremely difficult — he has struggled to find common words, appeared confused, and shown limited awareness of his condition, clear signs of brain trauma.

Unfortunately, his condition has now worsened.

We have since learned that the subdural hematoma has increased in size, and as a result, Gary was rushed into emergency surgery for a craniotomy to relieve pressure on his brain. This development has been devastating and incredibly frightening for our family, especially with him being so far from home.

At this time, Gary remains under close medical supervision. While we are hopeful, his recovery is uncertain and will take time. Doctors had originally estimated a hospital stay of approximately two weeks, but with this emergency surgery, his length of stay — and the complexity of his care — is likely to increase.

Because this medical emergency occurred overseas and Gary does not have insurance coverage for foreign medical expenses, all costs must be paid out of pocket and often upfront. We have already received invoices for his initial hospital stay, and costs are increasing rapidly with surgery, ICU-level care, imaging, and specialist monitoring.

What was meant to be a six-week adventure of a lifetime has suddenly become a medical crisis we never could have anticipated.

We are asking for help to cover:

Emergency hospitalization, surgery, and ICU care

Ongoing neurological monitoring and imaging

Medications and specialist treatment

Costs associated with safely transporting Gary back home once he is stable

Unexpected and urgent medical expenses

Every donation, no matter the amount, will go directly toward Gary’s medical care and bringing him home as soon as doctors allow. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser is an enormous help and deeply appreciated.

We are doing everything we can to navigate insurance options and next steps, but the financial burden is immediate and overwhelming.

Thank you for reading, for your kindness, and for holding our family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Your support means more than words can express.

With gratitude,
Danielle, Stephanie & family
