We all know that 2020 has been a difficult year. For the Powers Family, there has been an incredible amount of pain, loss, illness and uncertainty. Anyone lucky enough to know Jason, Laura and their two boys, will tell you that you won't find more hard-working, loving, kind and giving people anywhere.
In August 2019, Laura was diagnosed with a softball size cervical tumor and began treatments with Jay by her side. Just 4 days after starting her treatments, Jay was severely injured on the job where he worked as a plumber. Jay broke his tibia, ribs and suffered a traumatic break to his calcaneus and needed surgery with external fixators installed, the first of many. While going through treatments, Laura now took care of Jay, unable to walk, and their two boys. Jay would need another surgery in October of 2019 to help get him back on his feet.
Fast forward to 2020...February comes and after numerous unsuccessful treatments, Laura has surgery to remove the tumor and a complete hysterectomy. Jay, still healing from his second surgery and struggling to walk, starts nerve injections to help with the excruciating pain. Laura, the primary bread winner with Jay on workers compensation, loses her job in March of 2020 as COVID hits and brings lockdown. May would bring a third surgery for Jay, a subtalar fusion with 5" long screws. In July, the family health insurance is discontinued due to Laura losing her job and in August, their young son suffered a severe break to his leg. October would come, Jay is told his third surgery has failed, the bone growth stimulator he has been on since January will continue and he will most likely need to fourth surgery. He has not been released to drive or go back to work.
Jay and Laura have exhausted their savings due to substantial medical bills, trying to keep up on mortgage payments and take care of their two young sons. All of this while trying to heal from multiple surgeries, illness, job loss and all that 2020 has brought with it.
Please, if you are able, help this beautiful family keep food on the table, a roof over their heads, so that they are able to heal and get back on their feet.
