Emergency Medical Expenses and Loss of Income

Donation protected
This GoFundMe campaign is for my sister, Laurie Davis, owner and operator of Jagged Edge Salon in Rossville, KS.  Wife of Tim Davis. Mother of Brandon Yocum, Ryan Yocum and Alex Fank.  Grandmother to Avah and Cale Yocum.

Halloween is supposed to be scary, but not life-threatening.  But, she almost died on Thursday.  Laurie hadn't felt well for a few days and stayed home on Halloween to recuperate.  She went to the bathroom to splash water on her face and passed out.  Luckily, Tim was home and was able to call 911 as she was unresponsive. By the time the ambulance rushed her to the hospital, her hemoglobin level was at a 3.  Normal is 12.  The reality of the situation is that very few people with a level that low survive at all.

Several blood transfusions later, the doctors did a GI scope to see what was going on as they suspected an ulcer gone awry.  What was supposed to be a routine GI scope turned into emergency invasive surgery.  The surgeon discovered a 4cm pulsating ulcer that had eroded through the duodenum, where the stomach and intestines meet.  The ulcer ate through the wall and was up against an artery.  The only thing that saved Laurie from bleeding out completely was a small blood clot that stopped the artery from rupturing completely.

After several days in the ICU, Laurie is now resting in her room at Stormont Vail in Topeka.  The doctor has been very clear with her.  She is beyond lucky to be alive right now.   She will be in the hospital until at least Saturday and is unable to eat or drink anything until they can see if there are leaks in her stomach/intestines.

As most of you know, Laurie is a small business owner.  Every day her salon is closed is another day without pay.  While she has insurance through Tim's wonderful company, there is no telling how much it will cover given the extensive nature of her care and treatment.   With the holidays looming and at least 2-3 weeks away from work during her busiest season, she is panicking about making ends meet and the looming medical bills during a time when she needs to be resting and recovering.

Please consider helping her family in their time of need.  Those of you who know my sister know that she has a giving heart and is always willing to drop anything and help those around her.
