"We are shocked and devastated by the explosion today. The death toll may not be known for several days but what we do know is that in a disaster like this, children may be hurt, shocked, and separated from their parents," said Jad Sakr, the [director of Save The Children organization] in Lebanon. -- CNN .
"The Lebanese Red Cross said that every available ambulance from North Lebanon, Bekaa and South Lebanon was being dispatched to Beirut to help patients. At least one hospital was overwhelmed and was turning wounded people away. Patients were transported to hospitals outside Beirut because those in the city were at capacity." -- New York Times .
Prior to this event, Lebanon was facing an economic crisis that threatened the lives of its residents (read about that here ). Now, the explosion has destroyed lives, homes, businesses and families.
