Emergency in Esmeraldas: A forgotten community needs you

Help the Esmeraldas community remember that they are not alone after the disaster.

Esmeraldas, on the Ecuadorian coast, is a community with a high rate of historically marginalized Afro-descendant and indigenous population. It lives amidst state neglect, lack of basic services, structural racism and pressure from organized crime. Now, after a strong earthquake on April 25, 2025 and heavy rains, its reality is even more devastating: more than 200 families have lost everything.

The situation is critical:

1150 people displaced from their homes.

180 homes affected.

60% of the affected people live below the poverty line.

70% of the communities of Salima and San José de Chamanga are under water.

The Chachi indigenous community, living in areas of difficult access, has also been severely affected.

The health and education system was already precarious before the disaster; today many schools and community centers are disabled.

Access to drinking water and sewage is almost collapsed.

This is not just a natural emergency. It is the result of years of exclusion, racism and structural neglect.

Ayuda a la comunidad de Esmeraldas a recordar que no están solos después del desastre

Esmeraldas, en la costa ecuatoriana, es una comunidad con una alta tasa de población afrodescendiente e indígena históricamente marginada. Vive entre el abandono estatal, la falta de servicios básicos, el racismo estructural y la presión del crimen organizado. Ahora, tras un fuerte sismo el 25 de abril de 2025 y fuertes lluvias, su realidad es aún más devastadora: más de 200 familias lo han perdido todo.

La situación es crítica:

1150 personas desplazadas de sus hogares.

180 viviendas afectadas.

60% de las personas afectadas viven bajo el umbral de pobreza.

El 70 % de las comunidades de Salima y San José de Chamanga está bajo el agua.

La comunidad indígena Chachi, que vive en zonas de difícil acceso, también ha sido gravemente afectada.

El sistema de salud y educación ya era precario antes del desastre; hoy muchas escuelas y centros comunitarios están inhabilitados.

El acceso al agua potable y al alcantarillado está casi colapsado.

Esta no es solo una emergencia natural. Es el resultado de años de exclusión, racismo y abandono estructural.
