My children and I are facing an emergency after our home in Lake Orion was condemned by the city. We had been paying high rent without realizing the dangerous conditions we were living in. The house had severe electrical issues, gas leaks, and broken water lines. City officials told us that the home could have exploded at any time, and we were forced to live without water while breathing in gas and fumes. Our landlord had illegally remodeled the house, splitting it into a duplex and ignoring safety codes, which put our lives at risk.

Just as the new school year began, we were given 72 hours to leave our home. This sudden move has turned our world upside down, especially for my children who are trying to adjust to a new school year under stressful circumstances. We have found a safe new place to live, but we cannot move in until we cover the moving costs, deposits, and first month’s rent. I am pursuing legal action to recover our money from the landlord, but that process will take time.
