Emergency Hospital Stay Expenses

This feels strange, as I haven’t ever done something such as this. But as many of you know, Jordon Carnegie became ill in the middle of the night last Sunday/Monday on March 6th. Seemingly out of nowhere, severe flu symptoms included a 104 F (40.1 C) fever. He could barely function for days. He went to the ER Monday because of the dangerously high fever. The shot and medicines they prescribed did not fix the gruesome symptoms he was experiencing (I will spare you the details). By Friday March 10th, with no change to most of the symptoms, we went to a different hospital where he received the care and testing he should have had in the first place (thank you VMC!). After many tests and hours of waiting, they discovered he was almost septic (1.88 out of 2.0 for sepsis diagnosis) and that he has a severe gastrointestinal infection that was spreading which needed to be treated immediately with IV antibiotics for 24-48 hours due to the severity. If you’re unaware, sepsis can be fatal. He is now on the path to recovery! But, although healthcare in Mexico is far less expensive than in the USA, when you don’t have insurance, it can still sting.

I was let go from my US-based job last October for living in Mexico and I have been unsuccessful in getting a new remote job since. Our new primary source of income comes from The Palm Cabaret and Bar where Jordon performs an Elvis show and I work in the box office (I can’t just sit home all the time). Unfortunately, he had no shows in February, (and had to cancel this week due to illness) —so these charges are well beyond our means right now. When the Palm closes for the season (April or May) we may have zero income.

The hospital bills/stay totalled 85,000 pesos (4477 USD). My goal is to take care of the medical bills in full and give us a little cushion until we have new sources of income. Having a medical emergency during a financial crisis is no bueno!

This isn’t easy to do. I’m both ashamed and humbled to be in this position after having been financially successful these past several years. But if you have the means, and the desire to help us during this difficult time, it would mean so much to us! I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t a last resort.

Thank you for reading and for your consideration.
