I am fundraising for my mom and myself because we are facing an unexpected and overwhelming financial crisis. My dad is in a nursing home, and my mom has been relying on a spousal allowance from the county, which lets her keep most of his SSDI check each month. A few months ago, we tried to get extra help for my mom through long term healthcare, but we were told she would lose her spousal allowance if she went on it. We made it very clear that we did not want to move forward if that was the case, and we asked that nothing be filed. For months, we heard nothing and assumed everything was fine.
Last month, we received a letter saying my mom no longer qualified for the spousal allowance because of long term healthcare. Someone had filed the paperwork against our wishes and without notifying us. I called her insurance and canceled the long term healthcare, but the damage was done. Yesterday, my dad’s nursing home cleared out my mom’s entire bank account, leaving her in the negative. We’ve called the nursing home and the bank, and while they’re trying to help, we were told the process to fix this is not fast. They might be able to send a temporary refund, but it could take at least a week, and in the meantime, we have no money for bills, food, or anything else we need.
I am exhausted and feeling so defeated. I fight every day for my mom’s well-being, her medical care, and her happiness, but right now, hope feels very dim. We need help to cover bills, groceries, medications, and even pet food while we wait for this to be resolved. Any support or kindness would mean the world to us as we try to get back on our feet. Thank you for reading and for any help you can give.
