Emergency Disaster Fund-Randy Quinto &Molly Barnes

On Saturday, August 5, the Jökulhlaup, an ice damn, released from Suicide Basin and created huge destruction for many families living along the river. This was an unprecedented event - their condo, like many of their friends' homes, was not in a flood zone and sat back many feet from the river with tree and natural foliage protection. The magnitude of this event, per FEMA, was a less than 1% chance of happening.

The glacial outburst flood, resulted in peak water levels of 14.97 feet. This exceeded the record of 11.99 feet by almost three feet, or 180% of the volume of water.

Randy and Kaeden Quinto and Molly Barnes, along with their pups Abner and Ivan, had only roughly 20 minutes to grab what they could before evacuating their home. This decision was made by them, when they saw the magnitude of the destruction coming close to their home.

While their building has been stabilized, they are officially condemned and there currently is not a timeline for when they might be able to retrieve their belongings or if the building will be inhabitual. The condo association used the majority of savings to stabilize the building and next steps will be to see what funding might be available for the work.

Randy and Kaeden were born and raised in Juneau and Molly is a longtime Juneau resident. Randy and Molly are both educators with the Juneau School District and Kaeden is a senior this school year. They immensely appreciate any support you can provide for them during this traumatic time and will be utilizing monies donated to purchase immediate needs and to repair their home when/if they are able to return or to locate housing. At this time their insurance claim has been closed, since they haven't actually lost their belongings - they cannot however access them.
