Hi, my name is Kim Kolvig. I’m helping my friend Laurie and organizing this fundraiser on her behalf.
On the afternoon of Saturday, August 5th, Laurie was visiting friends when she was called by her neighbor to return home because they were being evacuated. She would only have a few minutes to grab any belongings she could. An unprecedented flooding event on the Mendenhall River in Juneau, Alaska caused by a break in a glacial dam. The flood waters rapidly rose, and the river carved a new path taking out trees, 50 feet of land and part of the foundation under the entire building where she lives and owns. Her’s is the unit on the second floor, right hand side as viewed from the river, suspended over the river. Because she was away from her condo at the time, when she returned home Laurie was only able to grab minimal essentials with the help of two bystanders. The building is now condemned and no one is able to retrieve any more of their belongings. There is hope that the building will again become habitable in a few months.
Laurie has lived in Juneau for 36 years and had recently retired. If you know Laurie then you know she is a very giving person. Like many others in this community, Laurie has suffered a devastating loss, and we appreciate any support during this time of great uncertainty.
On Monday, she found out that her insurance company will be denying coverage for this devastating event. Thankfully flood waters have receded and no additional homes have been lost since Saturday.
