Emergency Funds for Martin

Donation protected
On Friday May 1st my friend Martin, who has been living unhoused in the Mission district of San Francisco for three years, was stabbed outside his tent. He was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for the life-threatening stab wounds he sustained, including severe arterial damage to his arm and a partially collapsed lung. Thanks to the persistence of his social worker at the hospital and other generous individuals, this week Martin was able to secure a voucher for one of the hotel rooms that the City of San Francisco is currently providing for people experiencing homelessness to shelter in place during the pandemic. This temporary housing situation is only good until the end of San Francisco's shelter in place orders, which as of now are scheduled to terminate on May 31st. After that, Martin's situation still remains unknown.

At this time, Martin is mostly bed-bound without the use of his left arm and limited abilities to walk. He cannot safely return to the streets after May 31st for a host of reasons, including the potential infection of his wounds, the compromised state of his lungs which puts him at greater risk if exposed to Covid-19, and perhaps most acutely, fear of repeated violence by the people who attacked him. Martin has no remaining family in San Francisco and, owing to the pandemic, many of the City's resources for people experiencing homelessness have been severely limited or cut off entirely. This puts him in a precarious and very dangerous position once his time in the hotel is up.

I've started this fund on his behalf to raise money to help pay for a future stay in a hotel room once shelter in place orders have been lifted, and also to help pay for the innumerable medications he's currently on.

Martin came to San Francisco by himself as a child during the Nicaraguan Revolution and has lived in the Mission for almost forty years. His goal once he has healed is to return to Nicaragua and be reunited with his children and family. Martin and I met when I first moved to San Francisco last year and have been friends ever since. He is one of the sweetest, funniest, and most thoughtful people that I know and it has been devastating to see him go through this. I've been helping him in every way that I can, but he needs greater financial assistance than I have the ability to provide. Anything that you can spare at this time would be graciously appreciated by both Martin and myself.

Thank you ❤️
