Emergency fund to save Alicia García Herrera's house.
Donation protected
My aunt’s story is one that’s too common these days: months of drought immediately followed by severe rainfall and hurricane season have caused sinkholes and mudslides, severely impacting the home of my aunt, Alicia García Herrera, as well as her entire neighbourhood in the outskirts of Boca del Río, Ver.
In its current state, the house is unsafe to live in. Most of the western side of the structure was affected by the sinkhole. The house has been condemned by Civil Protection and we only have six months to raise these funds before the house is demolished for being a risk to public safety.
The worst part is that she has home insurance, but it doesn’t cover the total cost. Even with the government programs offering further assistance, she is still short $97000 pesos (about $5000 USD) to replace the foundation and save her home.
My aunt is currently living with relatives and friends, but this is obviously not a permanent solution. She is 81 years old and living on a retirement pension as well as what she gets from doing informal jobs like selling homemade meals and home cleaning. She can’t afford the current cost of rent and maintain her standard of living, and there’s no way for her to borrow or earn money on her own because of her age.
It’s hard on everyone for her to keep moving between temporary living arrangements, and her home has many memories for her that can’t be replaced.
We are also doing local fundraising here in México, doing whatever we can to help her. It would mean the world to us if you can spare even a small amount.
All proceeds from this campaing will be used to pay for the repairs of Alicia García Herrera's house. Through government assistance and savings from family we've covered the cost of materials and a good portion of the repair costs we were quoted, this campaing is to gather up the rest.
All the donations will be kept in a savings account and will be paid directly to the contractors.
As you can see in the photos, it’s a modest home, but it’s hers, and none of this was her fault. There’s so much in the world that we can’t fix. But we can do something about this.
Thank you all.
