In the early hours of what began as a quiet night, my cousin Roxy’s life was turned upside down.

Around 3:30 AM, while sitting on her couch watching TV, Roxy heard a strange noise coming from her front hallway. When she went to check, she saw flames crawling up the house next door—just an alley away. Within moments, the fire had spread so fast that when she opened her door again, flames were already coming through her windows.

Roxy acted fast. She grabbed her dogs, her phone, and her keys, and ran. One of her dogs is blind and terrified, the other was panicked and difficult to manage without a leash—but somehow she managed to get them both to safety through falling ash and the chaos of the fire. She met her neighbors at the bottom of the stairs while on the phone with 911, trying to unlock the back door with shaking hands and two frightened dogs pulling in different directions.

Miraculously, everyone made it out okay. But Roxy lost everything.

Her home, her furniture, her clothing, her dishes and cookware—gone. Every photo, every keepsake, every piece of her personal history—destroyed in a matter of minutes. The second-story windows where flames poured out? That was her living room.

Roxy is heartbroken, but she’s safe—and now she’s facing the overwhelming task of starting over. She’s started an Amazon registry at the urging of friends, but it’s only the beginning. What she truly needs now is a foundation to rebuild her life.
