So about a month ago our fridge unexpectedly died. No electrical faults, no warning signs beforehand, and we had just finished stocking it full of groceries a day or two before. Our landlord had mentioned that when it came to replacing appliances that it was down to us, but if we needed one quick he could find a secondhand one (not ideal). Considering the urgency, I shelled out a decent chunk of money on a payment plan for a good new fridge as well as quick installation. I used a payment plan because, at the time, I could afford the monthly cost, but this ability has since disappeared since Im the sole payer of Council Tax and they refuse to lower it despite me being the only person in the house who works.
When discussing the price with my housemates, they said that I'd make the money back either through them paying me back or them discussing a rent hiatus with the landlord. In the weeks that followed I kept asking about this and not really getting a straight answer, getting more and more stressed. Finally, on the fourth time that I ask, Im told that not only can they not afford to pay me back, but when they asked the landlord about the rent hiatus he threatened to not only not pause the rent but increase it to nearly 50% more than it had been already. So Im effectively not getting that money back.
My housemates insist they can pay for it once they graduate in a couple months and get a job but with the market as it is I dont know if I can rely on that, and I need that money back as an assurance. This is not to say Im angry at them, I just would rather they not have given me the assurance
All of this has been on top of me desperately trying to recover from the amount I spent on credit last year moving and getting the house to a better state, not to mention handling the rising grocery costs almost entirely on my own. This fundraiser is just to recoup the cost of the fridge, though if I hit the goal I may expand it to help pay off some of the credit card debt I owe
