Hi Everyone, I am fundraising for our pup Lady who is in desperate need of major dental work.

OUR STORY
Lady belonged to a friend and neighbour of ours named Dave. He had first got her as a support animal friend for his wife who was very ill. After his wife passed Lady became a wonderful support for him for five years as he was seriously ill himself.
I am not much of a dog person but when Lady and I first met it was love at first sight. We were instantly best friends.

In October 2022, Dave had not been heard from a while, with his serious health issues he’d requested I do a wellness check if he had not been seen for a while. When I did a wellness check I found him in his apartment, he had passed about a week earlier and Lady had been locked in the apartment with him the entire time. It was an incredibly traumatic experience for her, and for me as well. I immediately took her out of the apartment.
Dave only had a couple family members living and none could take Lady. I immediately asked permission to take her in and they were happy to give her to us as she is a very senior dog and they feared they would not find anyone to take her.
Lady is an incredible dog and her and I immediately bonded. She’s absolutely brilliant and incredibly well behaved. She’s very loved by all the tenants in our building, everyone is excited to see her and our neighbours like to drop off treats and toys for her.
I adore Lady she has been an amazing support through trauma and difficult times and I promised her the day that we received permission to keep her that she would feel loved every single day for the rest of her life.

LADY’S TEETH.
When we first got Lady she had horrible breath so we immediately started a dental care regimen which included tooth brushing and additives to her water.
Unfortunately her dental problems were already too far advanced and her breath worsened.
Aware that she would likely need some teeth pulled I started calling vets but there is a major vet shortage and we were unable to find one they would take new patients before June. I widened my search and was contacting vets in neighbouring towns and could still find nothing.
Meanwhile she was losing weight and become lethargic.
Finally I found an emergency vet hospital near Victoria and brought her in where they gave her an antibiotic shot and some painkillers as well as referring her for dental surgery. This vet visit cost $700 plus travel and time off work.
We then were unable to get in for dental surgery in a timely manner. After calling around we finally found another vet in Sidney, over an hour away. We got in for a consult (Another $250 plus travel time and time off work) and FINALLY have her booked for dental extractions on March 22nd.
It was mentioned by the vet that palliative care for her teeth was an option but she didn’t recommend it. The vet said that we could just give her antibiotics and painkillers, but it would cause a health decline and she would be in great pain for the rest of her life. Aside from her teeth her health is excellent.
We are applying for funding from a local not for profit which will cover $500 of the work but are left with a large bill for the rest.
After spending $1000 already, having to take time off as well as having to take another day of on her surgery’s date and having to spend over $150/month on wet food for her we simply don’t have the funds for the remainder of the dental work. The quote is up to nearly $3200 depending on how difficult extraction is. With the funding we are applying that leave us with a bill of potentially $2700, the lower end of the quote leaves us needing $1700.
We are asking for help of up to $2700 as my savings are tapped out. If we are able to fundraise the full amount but the vet bill ends up being less we will use the excess to pay for travel, balance out the wage loss from having to take time off, and pay for wet food (her food is costing about $150/month right now.) Any amount over those cost will be donated to the Cowichan Valley SPCA.

Lady is a very special dog. She has been through some extreme trauma losing her bonded person twice, one of them in a really traumatic way. We want to do everything we can to maintain the highest quality of life we can for her for the rest of her days. She’s a good girl.
