Emergency Support for My Displaced Family in Gaza

Hoping this finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. I come to you with a most urgent and time-sensitive appeal. My family is in Gaza, I have been unable to see them for 8 long years. They are displaced in Gaza and under the constant and imminent threat of death, injury, and illness, even during this so-called “pause”. Their four collective homes have been bombed and are destroyed beyond repair. The entire family – my mother, father, sisters, brother, brother-in-laws, pregnant sister-in-law, nieces, and nephews – are all now permanently homeless with no recourse. We have been under occupation for our entire lives, none of us have experienced anything like what is happening now.

My name is Ahmed Al Munirawi, I am a Palestinian actor born and raised in Gaza, currently living in Berlin. I am doing everything within my power to help my family get out of Gaza, in order to assure their safety and to make sure that they can have any kind of future at all. I would not ordinarily ask for assistance from others, but due to current circumstances and the life or death urgency of this situation, I recognize that my efforts alone are not enough. Community support is needed.

There is a chance right now to get the whole family out of Gaza and into Egypt by way of the Rafah Crossing. It is very uncertain how long we will have this opportunity for, making it critical to raise the necessary funds as quickly as possible.The longer it takes the more in danger they are all in. No one knows how much longer the bombardment of Gaza will last and what the continued cost to human life will be. For my family’s future, your help is essential. I am deeply concerned about the entire family, and we are all especially concerned for the safety and health of my sister-in-law who is 8 months pregnant.

The funds you contribute will accomplish the following:

Cover the expensive costs of safe passage into Egypt. The vast majority of funds will be utilized for this.
Set up the family with a temporary place to stay in Egypt, while it is determined what the best path forward for them is.
Cover some of their initial living costs while in Egypt. We hope to provide enough for at least a couple of months. They need time and space to breathe after being in Gaza during this genocide.
After all of the above is accomplished, additional funds will be utilized to help me through my current situation so that I can be of more support to my family. I have taken on the responsibility of their care during this very precarious and uncertain time and into the future.

My personal situation/circumstances are described below:

Like so many Palestinians, I am profoundly affected by the assault on Gaza. Since the beginning of the bombardment on Gaza last month, I have barely managed to sleep, work, focus, eat, or function at all. The constant worry for my family’s safety has taken a significant toll on my well-being.

We, Palestinians, feel the impact of the ruthlessness of the apartheid regime on every level - in our bodies, minds, and spirits. This is already the 6th war I have experienced in my lifetime and much damaging traumatic memory has been triggered with this latest bombardment. Seeing the active genocide of my people witnessed by the world paired with the apathy of so many governments and people has destroyed so much for me, including hope.

Due to the distress and circumstances of the current bombardment, many people from Palestine have lost their jobs, are unemployed or underemployed, or are unable to find work. Unfortunately, I now find myself in such a situation. As a direct result of the genocide in Gaza, I have unjustly lost my job. I have no employment now and am unable to work because of the continued stress from the assault. I am deeply concerned about my health insurance, ability to sustain myself, my future, and my family’s future.

Despite my pride, a lifetime of taking care of myself, and a deep dedication to not being a burden on others, I now find that I have no other recourse but to ask for help. I need community support at this time. I really need to feel safe and secure, and to be able to take care of my family.

In addition to my regular living costs (rent, insurance, food, phone, etc.) my employment was also helping me with some very specific, time-sensitive, and critical goals that will allow me to be of more support to my family. I am eligible to apply for my German citizenship at the end of March, 2024. This will bring a great deal of much-needed stability, access, and freedom into my life and the life of my family. Before that can happen, I must complete some mandatory and costly coursework as part of the citizenry application, pay my taxes, and present evidence of income.

In addition, I really need to see my family. We have been separated from one another for too long. I hope to join them in Egypt once they are able to travel there safely in order to be of support to them. I don't even know if such a reunion is possible, I am praying they will all still be alive.
