I am Loure Dews-Gray, the mother of Kaleb Dews. Over Thanksgiving, Kaleb suffered from a sinus infection resulting in the creation of a bacterial infection which went to his brain and created bacterial meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is a rare but serious infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. It can be fatal within 24 hours and requires immediate medical care.
Kaleb had a couple of emergency surgeries, including a craniectomy to release pressure and infection from his brain. Kaleb has suffered weakness on his right side and is fighting blood clots. He is currently on a breathing tube to assist his lungs. They are keeping him sedated to give his brain a fighting chance to rid the bacteria from his system.
Before this radically strange illness, Kaleb was a vibrant, full-of-energy science and math wiz. He was just getting started on his basketball journey as a 6'2'' beginner and preparing for the second semester of 8th grade.
Kaleb was a huge support a couple of years ago when his mother, Loure Dews-Gray, went through a cancer scare with ameloblastoma and recovery at MD Anderson.
Loure has worked through illness, divorce, and household financial hardships by starting her own laundry business and completing catering to support both Kaleb and her youngest son.
Kaleb's radical medical emergency has placed their household at beyond survival mode.
Please support Kaleb and the family by donating for medical bills, parking, household adjustments for Kaleb's recovery, and financial work lost for Loure.
