EMDR Psychotherapists’ Association of Armenia

Donation protected
As some of you may know, I was born and raised in Armenia .  I moved to the USA in 1991 and became a psychotherapist as it was my livelong dream.  In 2018, after volunteering with orphans with a background of trauma, disabilities and mental illness through a small group home in Armenia, I realized how healing EMDR could be in my home country.

In February, we held the first EMDR training in Armenia through generous donations of time, skill, financing and training.  It was an incredible few days where 35 psychotherapists and psychiatrists came together to learn to effectively use this empirically-based, effective, trauma-informed psychotherapy.

From that first training, we decided to launch the EMDR Psychotherapists’ Association of Armenia.  Our association is a non-profit organization governed by EMDR Europe professional and ethical standards and it is the only organization that has been recognized by EMDR Europe (EMDREA) as an associated member among 32 EMDR member organizations in Europe. The need for our association is great.  With the ongoing war along the country border, a low social-economical level of population, trauma resulting from the 1988 earthquake, ongoing political changes, and the intergenerational trauma of genocide, we still lack effective therapy to address those issues.

As you probably know, EMDR psychotherapy is an evidence-based integrative psychotherapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD), and of other psychiatric disorders, mental health problems and somatic symptoms. EMDR has a broad base of published case reports and case controlled research that supports it as an empirically validated treatment of trauma and other adverse life experiences. EMDR therapy has been recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) as a treatment of choice for PTSD and by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) acknowledged it among the most effective treatments for treating anxiety, depression and PTSD. Our mission is to support mental health care by promoting the EMDR psycho-therapeutic approach in Armenia. We organize, plan, and coordinate high standard trainings for psychotherapists and psychiatrists to help them develop a higher level of expertise in this psycho-therapeutic approach. We strive to create opportunities to promote EMDR therapy as a treatment of choice for trauma related disorders which will greatly enhance the potential to heal in the community.

We are so excited for 2020 as we have schedule two more trainings of varying levels for professionals in Armenia.  Both trainings will be facilitated by highly regarded specialists from Europe and will need some financial resources.  We are seeking support to make these trainings happen and are currently trying to raise $9,600.  Please let us know if you would like to see a detailed budget.  And thank you for your interest in joining us to promote health and healing in Armenia.

It is an honor to be a part of this important work.
Sincerely,

Lousine Stepanian, LMFT, PsyD.
