My name is Stacy Rumsey and I am raising funds to help my daughter, Riley, buy a new vehicle that is large enough to transport her son Embry (my 13 year old grandson), who was paralyzed in March. Complications from spinal surgery to correct >120° kyphosis that was severly deforming his upper spine and threatening his heart and lungs as well as his spinal cord, left him unable to feel or control any muscles below his upper abdomen, including his legs and core muscles. He spent 4 months in the PICU and we are so grateful that Embry survived life-threatening complications that almost took him from us several times. He has a bulky, heavy, custom wheelchair that is too large to fit in Riley's current vehicle, as well as other medical equipment that must be with him at all times. In addition, Embry has a twin brother, Fox, who needs to be able to ride with them. After spending 4 frightening and difficult months in Indianapolis at the hospital, Riley was able to go back to work at her job in July. Transporting him is an ordeal that requires 2 adults, at least one of whom is trained in all of his emergency care, and all the necessary emergency equipment and supplies he needs. Riley's car is small and Embry cannot safely ride in it. Insurance is denying his custom carseat which is necessary because he only has one arm, making him likely to slip out of the shoulder strap in an accident. He is also unable to use his core to hold himself upright and falls over without support. Currently, we have to lay him down across the backseat while buckled into a harness that is then attached to all three seatbelts in the backseat. With two adults up front and Embry across the backseat, there is no room for Fox to sit and not nearly enough room for his wheelchair and medical equipment. Now that Embry's stage 4 pressure wound is almost completely healed (hallelujah!), he should be able to sit upright in a custom carseat. We are searching for a safe, affordable transportation option so that Embry can get out of the house more often for his many Dr appointments and to enjoy life!
