Very rarely in our lives do we find ourselves blessed to know a person who is a beacon of light. Shameka (Meka) was absolutely that person for me and an innumerable amount of others. So when I learned of her passing the shock and pain was immediate and will remain for a very long time. This pain, and the pain felt by so many others pales in comparison to what her husband, my best friend, Will, is experiencing.
He lost his wife, his partner, his balance, his savior, the mother of his children, in the blink of an eye the day after Thanksgiving this year. We find ourselves entering into the holiday season planning for our own families while Will's utmost desire is simply to hold the love of his life again. He is still reeling and attempting to comprehend his new norm of having his step-son who he raised from infancy swooped away and being a single father to a beautiful set of twins who have development challenges and needs that require significant attention and resources to raise.
This time of year I know we tend to run short and cut things close due to the nature of the holiday, but I ask simply for a helping hand to assist in taking care of family needs that will continue to arise as he sifts through the rubble and starts to rebuild his life. I can only imagine the isolation and desperate feeling he is facing right now however, I do know that he is loved by many and that this is one way to show that we have his back and can help him through this journey he has ahead of him.
