The Healing Journey

Donation protected
Imagine spending your childhood growing up in an overcrowded, dilapidated, communist government run orphanage at the outskirts of town. The townspeople shun or ignore you, the orphanage staff subject you to all forms of abuse and/or severe neglect and like the other children around you, you fight and step on each other just to survive.

Then, imagine you discover that your parents, the ones who were supposed to love and care for you no matter what, chose to abandon you and leave you in this place.

Imagine how your body, brain and soul adapt to help you survive. You may become hardened and push other away or you may grab on to anyone who comes along in order to not be alone – regardless of whether the relationship is healthy or not, or you may just shut down and become unable to interact in any fashion.

These are our beloved youth. They are miraculous. They have survived. They are working towards healing. They long to be loved and to love in healthy ways.

Twenty six years ago Fred and Karleen Dewey of Mercy Ministries , began a mission to abandoned babies in Romania. They arrived on a dark summers night to a country reeling from revolution. They discovered hospital attics full of silent babies – the little ones had discovered it wasn’t worth crying because no one ever came. They discovered orphanages full of children in desperate need of care. This trip launched a journey with the orphaned children that continues today.

In the early years Mercy Ministries brought over teams of medical specialists to work with the children. Later, teams were brought over each summer to provide summer camp experiences. Deep, lasting relationship were formed and today Mercy works with these young adults as they strive to heal from Developmental Trauma and grow with leadership, spiritual and skill training.

Fred and Karleen have embarked on what they believe will be their last trip to Romania. Though no longer running Mercy Ministries , they are active volunteers, mentors and cheerleaders for the current directors, Mel and Diane.

As we celebrate with Fred and Karleen and recall the fruitful past Mercy has had with the abandoned youth we also look towards the future.

One upcoming event we are anxiously anticipating is “Transforming Trauma: Creativity in Action”, an arts camp we are hosting this summer. So much current research highlights how awaking creativity in the brain, body and soul can assist in the work of healing from trauma. The camp will be run by a Mercy Ministries intern (Jenna) along with two other volunteers (Bre and Sarah). All three of these amazing individuals were members of past camp teams and are passionate about the work and the youth!

In order to fund the camp, as well as this last time Fred and Karleen will have with the youth, we need to raise $7,500. Would you consider partnering with us and investing in the lives of these young people? All donations are tax deductible as Mercy Ministries is a registered 501 (c) 3.

Our youth have overcome so much but they still need and seek healing as they reach for hope.
