THE HOT MESS’S GUIDE TO BECOMING A BETTER YOU (In Just Two Acts!) Written by Emma Rose
SYNOPSIS-
Self proclaimed “recovering hot mess”, Eve, has lived her life caught in a constant cycle of failed self improvement attempts that only lead her back to where she started, so she creates the unconventional guide for messy girls in pursuit of a rebrand. Yet as she journeys on the quest to clean up her act, her subconscious personified as a chaotic ensemble of characters test just how foolproof her methods are, and if the “new” Eve can escape the “old” Eve’s thoughts.
ABOUT:
My name is Emma Rose, the writer of this play. This project features many talented individuals, and we need support to bring it to the stage. However, before I ask for your support in my endeavor to bring this passion project of mine to life, I wanted to share what led me here.
What led me here are the following two things I believe to be true:
1. Shame and fear cannot coexist with connection.
2. If mindless scrolling is the new daily news, ten step morning routines that promise becoming a better you are the daily weather announcements- it can very well change the next morning, and it will certainly change the next week.
In the midst of an obsession to rebrand motivated by the need to distract from facing what’s inside, and to satisfy the urge for instant gratification my generation has been fed through internet preacher’s inescapable sermons detailing the faux pas quick fix “wellness” routine’s, I found myself caught in a cycle- I adapt some routine that cleans up the outside, and when the inside doesn’t follow suit, I get frustrated then try a new one. Then I keep going till finally when I thought I was going to lose my mind, I found the humor, so I wrote this play for anyone that feels messy, and wished they could be someone else, tried to, then thankfully found your way back to yourself.
If our inner world is a bedroom, everyone has dirty laundry on their floor and empty water bottles on their bed from time to time, and if you’re convinced there is one person on earth that never does, then you just haven’t been inside enough yet.
To touch on the two beliefs mentioned prior- media portrays that connection is what life is all about, which is true. Yet the media has also used shame & fear as a tool to kill connection. In other words- we are led to believe that our mess makes us unworthy of love, and to receive it we must show up as our cleanest self, and to keep it we must stay that way. Despite flaws being an inevitable part of the human experience, we fear them being seen and journey on the pursuit of covering up so much of who we are that we can never truly open up, which robs us of the most human experience- love.
My play strives to encourage everyone to open the door to your room, look at the mess that you believe to be so terrible and finally smile at it, then welcome someone else inside as it is, because you don’t only deserve company when it is tidy, and isolation when it isn’t, and while clutter is overwhelming, it is proof that we have lived.
Any and all support for this project is greatly encouraged and I cannot thank you enough.
