**UPDATE**
Huge thank you to everyone who has donated!! We appreciate all of the love and support.
Update on miss Ember:
Embers platelets on Sunday were 0. On Monday morning we finally got THE call; her platelets were 42,000 (normal low is 140,000), but she could come home!! We did more labs again on Wednesday and her platelets were 282,000!! She is no longer at risk for spontaneous bleeding and is in REMISSION!
This journey is still far from over. She will be on multiple medications for a while, and she will require routine lab work and follow up appointments. However, she is HOME, she is recovering, and she is making improvements every day!
Again, thank you all for the prayers, love and support. We are so thankful for the incredible care she received at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital and we are so happy that she is home!
This is our miniature Australian shepherd, Ember. She is 4 years old and was recently diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia - her body is attacking her platelets. We noticed a rash on her belly, soft stools with a bit of blood, and a dark brown plaque on her teeth over the course of a few days. We scheduled a vet appointment for 7/25 at 10am, but upon waking up, we noticed her right eye (the blue one) was very bloody. We immediately brought her to the emergency vet at 4am for testing, and she only had 1% of the amount of platelets she was supposed to have. She was referred for hospitalization and treatment, including steroids and chemotherapy, to slow her immune system in hopes of allowing her body to produce platelets without them being attacked. She stayed overnight, and the morning of 7/26, she had 0 platelets and her red blood cell count was lower. They recommended another 24 hours in the hospital for the same treatment. The morning of 7/27, she still had 0 platelets and her red blood cells dropped a considerable amount. She will now be getting the same treatment plus a blood transfusion to buy her body more time to make platelets.
The estimated price was $5-8k, and with a third night in the hospital and the transfusion, it will be up to $6,500 with the possibility of more expenses depending on results the morning of 7/28. All funds will go towards Embers inpatient care, and the outpatient care that follows (short term steroid use, antibiotics, follow up visits, labs, etc). Anything helps. Please pray for our sweet girl and share this with friends and family.
