Help Indigenous Embera people from Colombia

On Sept 14, 2020, a small tornado surprised the indigenous Embera Chami tribe from the Risaralda area, located in the central mountain region of Colombia.

It is very unusual for this region of the country to suffer from this type natural disaster as the mountains naturally act as guardians of the tribe, protecting them from the strong winds and the encroaching of colonized culture.

However, this year the mountains could not stop the strong winds from a nearby tropical storm, which hit and destroyed more than 16 family’s homes.

More than 34 people and 16 kids are now struggling to survive and rebuild.

The Embera people are needing your solidarity and your economical generosity in order to re-establish their home.

Your contribution will help them with:

- Buying construction materials for 16 houses ($3000)

- Paying extra fees for transportation of material as they are located in a very remote area ($500)

- Food is needed as the strong winds destroyed some of their crops and affected some of their animals’ lives.  ($1000 )

- Most of their community has medical needs that haven't been tended to.  We hope that some extra money can be gathered so that they can take some of the children and the elders to the closest medical facilities ($500)

More than 45 people, including children, are sleeping without shelter, so the fastest we are able to gather the supporting funds, the easiest it will be for them to start re-building their community.

The Embera people are one of the remaining tribes of Colombia who still keep their tradition of weaving beads and celebrating women as the carriers of Earth’s weight on their shoulders. These people haven’t had an easy year, not only due to Pandemic emergency  taking away many of their elders and leaders lives, but also because strict quarantine measures in the country haven’t allowed them to sell their art, which is the main source of income.  As with many other countries in South America, the Colombian government have not offered any economical support to their people and the struggle of course affects already marginalized communities the worst.

The tribe will need our prayers and support to be able to keep their art and their traditions alive, as many other indigenous people around the world struggle to survive in places where they are not valued or seen for the essential part of the human family they are.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
